Tier 1 Effective Writing Practices: The Writing Process

MTSS team members will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to improve writing instruction. Instructional practices for tier 1 (whole class) instruction within a multi-tiered system of support will be discussed. Topics include how to schedule time for writing instruction, optimize the relationship between language and the writing process, explicitly teach the writing process, expand the writing process to genre-specific writing, and motivate and engage students to become a classroom community of writers. As part of this workshop, participants will develop a comprehensive action plan to guide implementation of effective, research-based writing instruction.


  • Identify the components of the writing process
  • Use explicit instruction to teach all components of the writing process
  • Apply the writing process to genre-specific writing instruction
  • Incorporate strategies for motivating and engaging students in the writing process during classroom instruction

Target Audience

Reading Educators, General Educators, Special Education Leaders

Individuals attending this course must arrive on time and stay the duration of the course in order to receive Act 48 Professional Education hours. Requests for exceptions are to be brought to the attention of the individual´s Superintendent or IU Director prior to the course.
