PA LETRS Train-the-Trainer Certification Modules 4-6 - Level 2

In Module 4 the focus is on the importance on word meanings (vocabulary) and oral language for reading comprehension. The learner will be prepared to train others in this modules, increasing knowledge of relationships among words and the effective instructional practices to increase students’ vocabulary in both breadth and depth, (Focus: All grades)

Module 5 reviews the rational for a fluency component in lesson design and defines its close relationship to reading comprehension. Participants will be prepared to train others in this module to learn and practice techniques for speed drills, repeated readings, simultaneous and alternate oral reading, calculating reading fluency, and charting the results of exercises. (Focus: Kindergarten through Second Grade; Remedial Instruction)

Module 6 addresses the research base for teaching reading comprehension, the reasons why children have difficulty with comprehension, and approaches for teaching comprehension at the phrase, sentence, paragraph, and passage levels. (Focus: All grades) The participant will be prepared to train others in this module.

  • Evaluate levels of word knowledge

Module 5 Objectives:

Attendees will be able to:

  • Define and explain fluency
  • List Ehri´s phases of word-reading development
  • Determine appropriate use of decodable text

Module 6 Objectives:

Attendees will be able to:

  • Define and explain comprehension processes
  • Define and explain the importance of background knowledge to reading comprehension
  • Explain how discourse organization affects comprehension

Target Audience

Consultants with reading expertise to be trained to be trainers in the LETRS program.

Individuals attending this course must arrive on time and stay the duration of the course in order to receive Act 48 Professional Education hours. Requests for exceptions are to be brought to the attention of the individual´s Superintendent or IU Director prior to the course.
