This event is by invitation only. You must have a registration key in order to register.

Participants will be provided with an overall structure and specific procedures for determining students’ qualifications for special education eligibility under the category of specific learning disabilities (SLD) in the area of writing. The legal and regulatory requirements for identifying students with SLD will be explained in relation to students who display written-expression difficulties. Participants will review the specific assessment procedures (subtypes of writing disorders, RtII Methodologies) that are undertaken during the provision of multiple tiers of instruction and intervention procedures for using these and other data to evaluate students’ eligibility for special education will be described. Illustrative case studies will be used to enhance participants’ understanding of these procedures.


  • Review basic concepts of writing assessment
  • Review critical elements of assessing a student’s skills in handwriting, spelling, and composition
  • Conceptualize technically adequate assessment procedures for writing to be used in SLD determination
  • Understand the concept of rate of improvement (ROI) and identify best practices in determining a student’s ROI during response to instruction and interventions in writing
  • Identify procedures for ruling out other factors and a lack of instruction as potential explanations for a student’s assessed deficiencies in writing
  • Distinguish students who are eligible for SLD identification and those who are not

Target Audience

Reading Educators, General Educators, Special Education Leaders

Individuals attending this course must arrive on time and stay the duration of the course in order to receive Act 48 Professional Education hours. Requests for exceptions are to be brought to the attention of the individual´s Superintendent or IU Director prior to the course.
