The CCSS expect students in grades 4 through 12 to be able to “Determine the meaning of grade-level academic English words derived from Latin, Greek, or other linguistic roots and affixes.” Let’s help students decode long words and also learn meanings. We focus on teaching prefixes, suffixes, roots, and families of morphologically related words, such as thermal, thermos, thermostat, thermometer, thermodynamic, exothermic reaction, etc. (Research, theory, and strategies, with group participation)
