In this session, participants continue to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to improve writing instruction for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Phases of genre-specific writing instruction, such as learning about genre, evaluating genre, and writing genre, will be discussed. Because students who are knowledgeable about text structure, recall and write text better than others who aren’t, this session will highlight the importance of making text structure for the genres of narrative, informational/explanatory, and opinion/argumentative writing visually explicit.

What if you could triple the speed of student learning? According to findings by Professor John Hattie, a strong sense of Collective Teacher Efficacy can yield over three years of student growth over one school year. Now ranked the most powerful influence on achievement in the Visible Learning research, Collective Teacher Efficacy is a belief that together teachers can positively impact student learning. When efficacy is high, teachers show greater persistence and are more likely to try new learning approaches. Join Visible Learning expert, Kristin Anderson, for a review of the major factors that influence student learning and a discussion about how to create the conditions for Collective Teacher Efficacy.

Intensive behavior analytic intervention for young children diagnosed with autism can produce large gains in social, cognitive, and language development. One critical area to address is repetitive behavior such as stereotypy. Applied research on evaluating and treating stereotypic behavior will be reviewed, focusing on effective interventions for building core adaptive living and social skills, in addition to procedures for treating stereotypic behavior directly. Response Interruption and Redirection (RIRD) research for treating stereotypy has shown that many variations of this procedure can be effective even with individuals with limited vocal, verbal skills. Variations of the procedure and when they are most appropriate will be discussed, along with videos depicting the procedure. This presentation will also describe repetitive behavior associated with anxiety and how to treat it.
