This session will examine the need to address challenges that students with disabilities may experience in physical education. The session leaders will provide background on the underlying reasons why students might have motor delays affecting access to the physical education curriculum and how to address the needs identified by the IEP team. In addition, the collaborative relationship between education staff, adapted physical education, and occupational and physical therapy will be emphasized to help students maximize function, mobility, and self-confidence. The training will also include practical strategies for the classroom, playground, and physical education environments to adapt activities, incorporate therapeutic strategies, develop strength and coordination, and generalize skills, and will examine successful strategies to provide instructional supports.

This presentation will provide an overview of quality physical education and offer insight on Adapted Physical Education (APE) as it pertains to the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA). The presentation will identify the responsibilities of the adapted physical educator and present innovative ideas and instructional strategies to support students with disabilities in the physical education class. The session will also include examples of available resources.

This session will cover instructional tips from professionals working with students with VI, deaf or HOH, or deafblind and is based on a compilation of journal articles related to this topic. This session will look at the correlations of physical activities and how they affect a student’s home life. Interviews from parents of students who have VI, are deaf or HOH, or deafblind will be shared. Real-life examples of skill demonstrations and physical activities will be presented. The importance of the team approach in educating the student will be examined along with strategies when working with interpreters or interveners. Participants will have firsthand experience of the physical activities using sensory loss simulation.

Children with visual impairments, blindness, or deaf-blindness (including students with multiple disabilities) have unique educational needs. In addition, they have very specific needs related to learning in physical education. Physical education is important, as it can cover all domains of behavior, including the affective, cognitive, and the psychomotor. Physical education also covers all of the nine Expanded Core Curriculum components when done correctly. The purpose of this presentation is to teach professionals the specific strategies to teach children with visual impairments in the elementary ages. This includes a variety of resources for participants to take home and share with colleagues and parents.
